Give Yourself A Hug Already

It seems that many people are feeling a little lost these days.  We're seeing messages that encourage us to Be All You Can Be and nudge us to find our life's pursuit and passion by finding out What Color is Your Parachute.  There is never enough time in the day, enough money in the world, enough skill to create your dream life, or enough energy to push yourself to new heights.  We are version 1.0 wanting so badly to upgrade to 2.0, but there isn't a map or guidebook to get us there.

That's because each of us is a wildly unique and interesting individual.  There isn't a one-size-fits-all version of anything that is going to give us the absolute black & white, step by step directions to get us to where we want to go.  If wanting to change was enough, we'd all be there already.  But there are a million different variables in each of our lives that wreak havoc with any development plan we try to put into place.  So, before we get any further....

Take a Deep Breath

I'm not going to spill out some random meditation.  I'm just going to tell you that if you are going to change, you have to start with an appreciation for where you are today.  So go ahead.  Give yourself a mental hug.  You as you isn't the worst thing you could be.  Could you be better?  Sure- we all could.  Could you be smarter, healthier, wealthier, etc.?  I wouldn't turn up my nose at any of those things.  But what we need to do is reframe our mental imagery of ourselves so that we can take our next step from the best possible place.

I talked a few posts ago about the power of just one step.  There is strength in identifying the power you are holding onto right now.  It is so easy to focus on all the negatives in our life, and I'm not suggesting that you ignore those things.  But there are often little things of positivity and joy that forget when we line up our list of platitudes.  It could even be something as simple as how you feel when you do something for another person.  We can feel gratitude for the happiness we see that we bring to others.

So What's Next?

Very soon I am going to be rolling out a program that is focused entirely on how we talk to ourselves, and how we can build confidence and own our authority by changing the way we do that.  The first piece of that process is going to be taking a non-judgmental view of where we are today.  Today isn't bad even though tomorrow is where we want to be.  In the meantime, we need to be good to ourselves in order to nourish our ability to learn and grow.

And once you give yourself a hug, reach out and give someone close to you a hug too.  You'll brighten their day and yours too.

What ways do you nourish your inner self for future growth?

I read a lot, I often hire coaches to get me through humps, I spend a lot of time reflecting and thinking. And, of course, I blog. A blog is many things for me: a form of meditation, communication, a way to connect with many people from my past and present, a way to teach, a way to keep me accountable and something that crystallizes my thinking and keeps me on track.

All of these sound wonderful Alison! I'd love to hear more about your coaching experiences- I've been giving some thought to going down that path myself lately. It really does seem that any form of writing can help work through all of our life experiences, and also provide a wonderful record of our life journey. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
